Encouraging Independent Learning in Psychology

This week, I observed a Y12 Psychology lesson on the topic of Biopsychology. I was told that this is an area that can set fear into the heart of the most scientific of Psychology students. Katy Jacques brought the topic to life with innovative ideas, such as writing on tables and ‘sweet neurons’:


There was one particular aspect of the lesson that could be applied to many other subject areas: how Independent Learning is approached in Psychology. I loved the idea of Challenge Homeworks – one student is given an envelope with a special task to research and present to the group:


If students are stuck for inspiration as to how they can work independently, the wall display offers plenty of ideas:
